Board Composition & Skills Matrix

The BoardOutlook Board Composition & Skills Matrix process is designed to help you identify the skills and competencies most critical for your client over the next 3–5 years.

The process will take place in two stages:

Stage 1: Board Composition Diagnostic

  • Using the BoardOutlook platform, members of the Nominations Committee will complete a short, 30-minute online survey (members are typically given 1 week to complete).
  • During this survey, they will be asked to identify the sector-specific and customer-related knowledge that is essential for board members, as well as work through a library of common board skills. From this, they will rate the criticality of each skill, identifying those that are most relevant to your client. Where a skill is identified as being highly critical, participants are invited to share further context on the related knowledge or experience that would be considered most valuable.
  • Following the survey, we will review the aggregated responses with you, highlighting the consensus view of the critical/general skills and underlying criteria identified by the Committee. Once we receive your sign off on this list, the selected skills will form the foundation for the Board’s self-assessment.

Stage 2: Skills Matrix Self-Assessment

  • Board members will then complete a short, 15-minute self-assessment (members are typically given 2 weeks to complete). In this step, they will evaluate their own individual capabilities against the core skills defined in Stage 1. The assessment also includes a light peer review component, enabling members to acknowledge peers as experts in specific areas.

Depending on your client's needs, this process can be run in one or two stages.
